TentRidge started the way most good outdoor gear stories start — around a campfire, arguing about whose tent leaked. We're a small team of backpackers, weekend car campers, and one recovering gear-hoarder who got tired of sifting through vague, sponsored "best of" lists that all seemed to recommend the same five products regardless of who was asking or where they were headed. So we built the site we wished existed: honest, specific, and written by people who actually pitch tents for a living — or at least for every free weekend they can get.

Our Founding Story

TentRidge was founded in 2021 by Casey Marlowe, a former outdoor retail buyer who spent eight years helping customers pick tents, sleeping bags, and stoves at a regional gear shop before it closed its doors. Casey noticed the same pattern over and over: shoppers were overwhelmed by marketing jargon and unsure which specs actually mattered for their trip. A three-season tent for a Boundary Waters canoe trip is not the same as one for a windy desert basecamp, and most review sites weren't making that distinction.

What began as a personal blog cataloguing gear tested on solo trips through the Adirondacks and the Wind River Range slowly grew into a small collective. Today, TentRidge is run by a team of five contributors spread across the Pacific Northwest, the Rockies, and the Appalachian corridor, each bringing a different climate, budget, and camping style to the table. We're not a massive editorial operation, and we like it that way — it means every review still has a name and a real trip behind it.

How We Review and Pick Products

Every tent, sleeping bag, backpack, stove, and accessory on TentRidge goes through a hands-on process before it earns a spot on the site. We don't rely on spec sheets alone, and we don't publish a review unless someone on our team has actually used the product outdoors.

• Real-world field testing. Tents are pitched in actual weather — rain, wind, and yes, the occasional surprise snow squall — not just in a backyard on a calm afternoon. We track setup time, weight in the pack, weatherproofing, ventilation, and how the product holds up after repeated use.
• Comparative testing.

We test similar products side by side whenever possible, so our comparisons are based on direct experience rather than memory or marketing copy.

• Long-term follow-up. We revisit gear months or seasons later to note wear, seam durability, zipper performance, and whether a product's claims hold up over time.
• Value and versatility scoring. We weigh price against real performance for the type of camper we think will benefit most — ultralight backpacker, family car camper, or festival-goer — rather than assuming a single "best" answer fits everyone.
• Independent purchasing. Whenever our budget allows, we buy gear at retail price just like our readers do, so we experience the same unboxing, instructions, and customer support they would.

What Makes TentRidge Trustworthy

We know the outdoor gear review space is crowded with content built to chase affiliate commissions rather than to genuinely help campers. Here's how we try to do things differently:

• Transparent affiliate relationships. TentRidge earns commission on some purchases made through links on our site. This never influences our rankings or recommendations — products are chosen and rated before any affiliate relationship is considered, and we turn down partnership offers that would require favorable coverage.
• No pay-to-play reviews. Brands cannot purchase a spot on our "best of" lists, and we do not accept payment in exchange for a positive review. When we receive a product for free to test, we disclose it clearly in the article.
• Named, credentialed writers. Every article on TentRidge is attributed to a real contributor with a bio describing their camping background, so you know whose judgment you're reading.
• Regular updates. Gear lines change, materials get discontinued, and prices shift. We revisit our top guides at least twice a year to keep recommendations current and remove products that no longer meet our standards.
